Boulder Community Health (BCH) is celebrating a century of care in 2022

BCH was born 100 years ago from a simple need of local control of health care resources for the health and well-being of Boulder County families. This celebration is an opportunity for BCH medical providers, staff and the Boulder Valley community to reflect on our incredible past, recognize our present and look ahead to an even brighter future.

BCH was born from the community

Community is central to BCH's name as it aligns with the focus of its mission, vision and long history.

BCH medical staff, employees and volunteers come from every corner of the Boulder Valley and beyond. When entering the doors for medical care, patients and visitors may recognize BCH's staff as a neighbor, a friend, or a family member. Physicians who are considering relocating to Colorado are uniformly amazed at the breadth and quality of medical services provided at BCH.

BCH's Board of Directors are area residents with diverse backgrounds who donate their time and expertise to help BCH leadership develop the strategic plans that guide its operations. As one of only two remaining independent, non-profit hospitals in Colorado, BCH's board members represent the diversity within the community and help to identify how local needs are evolving. For example, it’s widely acknowledged that care for mental health is inadequate across Colorado. For that reason, in 2019, BCH expanded efforts to support friends and neighbors with mental health issues by investing $45 million to open the Della Cava Family Medical Pavilion.

Partnerships are the heart of BCH.

In 2017, a new organizational vision of partnering to create and care for the healthiest community in the nation was unveiled. BCH’s partnership with Out Boulder County has been crucial for meeting the health needs of the LGBTQ community through accurate data collection.

In 2015, BCH identified limitations in our previous electronic health record (EHR) that were an impediment to best serving our LGBTQ community, so we invested $34 million to completely modernize our systems for improved care. EPIC and MyBCH were introduced to our community in 2019. These systems allow for patients’ Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity data (SOGI data) to be entered and updated at all care encounters, and the most recent data is available to all BCH staff and providers when accessing a patient’s chart.

Updates to our data collection also include the ability for patients to provide us with their preferred name and their gender identity through MyBCH, their private patient portal.

BCH’s President & CEO Rob Vissers, M.D. was quoted alongside Out Boulder County’s Executive Director Mardi Moore after Governor Jared Polis signed H.B. 22-1157 into law earlier in 2022. This new law requires all entities that report data to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to include sexual orientation, gender identity, disability status, race, and ethnicity in their data collection and reporting.
