The LGBTQ+ community has always had to take care of each other in the face of pandemics. One of the most pivotal and inspiring examples was the community support and activism during the initial years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Join us on World AIDS Day as Eric Sawyer, founding member of ACT UP and accomplished HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ+ advocate, speaks to the patterns of pandemics then and now with COVID-19 and MPX, public health successes and failures in addressing pandemics, particularly with MPX, and what we can do to take action today.

About Eric L. Sawyer:
Eric L. Sawyer is a co-founder of three influential AIDS organizations in the US: The original AIDS Activist group ACT UP NY; Housing Works, Inc. one of the largest US providers of housing, drug treatment, medical care and support for homeless people living with HIV; and also Health GAP, Inc. a global advocacy organization which fought for access to essential medicines, including HIV anti-retroviral drugs in the developing World.

From 2008 until 2016 Eric was the Civil Society Partnership Advisor in the New York Office of UNAIDS facilitating Civil Society involvement in HIV issues at the UN Secretariat. Mr. Sawyer has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and has been living with symptoms of HIV disease since 1981. Eric is also a long term survivor of HIV/AIDS.
